What is an Apicoectomy?

The goal of this procedure is to remove damaged tissue and the root tip of the affected tooth.

During an apicoectomy, our Endodontist carefully makes a small incision in the gum tissue to access the inflamed bone and surrounding area. The damaged tissue, along with the root tip, is removed. A root-end filling is then placed to seal the root and prevent future infection. Finally, the gum is sutured, and over time, the bone naturally heals around the root. Within a few months, your tooth should return to full function.

Is an Apicoectomy Right for You?

In many instances, a standard root canal is sufficient to save a tooth with damaged pulp, avoiding the need for extraction. However, when a root canal alone isn't enough to resolve the issue, our endodontists may recommend endodontic microsurgery, such as an apicoectomy.

This procedure is especially useful for addressing tooth fractures or hidden canals that may not appear on X-rays but continue to cause pain. It is also effective for treating damaged root surfaces and surrounding bone. If you're experiencing persistent tooth issues after a root canal, an apicoectomy might be the solution to preserve your tooth.
