Root Canal Treatment

  • Following an examination and x-rays, your endodontist will provide a diagnosis and present treatment options tailored to your needs. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions or share concerns with your endodontist or dental assistant—they’re here to help.
  • If endodontic treatment is chosen, a local anesthetic will be applied to ensure your comfort while the tooth is carefully prepared.
  • During the procedure, the damaged or infected pulp is removed. The interior of the tooth is then meticulously cleaned, shaped, filled, and sealed, completing this stage of your treatment.

Once your symptoms have subsided, or as advised by your endodontist, schedule an appointment with your general dentist to complete your permanent restoration.

Post-Root Canal Care Instructions

  • After your root canal treatment, your tooth will no longer be sensitive to hot or cold temperatures, but it may feel highly sensitive to pressure or touch.
  • Avoid chewing or biting on the treated tooth until your permanent restoration is complete.
  • Mild to moderate soreness is common, typically peaking around days 3, 4, and 5 after the procedure. This discomfort should gradually diminish over the next 10 to 15 days.
  • For pain management, we recommend taking 600–800 mg of ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) every 4–6 hours. If ibuprofen is not suitable for you, two 500 mg tablets of Extra Strength Tylenol can be used as an alternative.
  • Always consult your physician if you have concerns about these recommendations or their compatibility with your current medications.
  • A temporary filling has been placed in your tooth. Be sure to schedule an appointment with your general dentist for a permanent restoration once your symptoms subside or within the advised time frame.
  • If you have been prescribed medication, take it exactly as directed.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure a smooth recovery and long-term success of your treatment.
